The revelations came as top French psychiatrist\u00a0<strong>Samuel Lepastier<\/strong>\u00a0said it was highly likely Lubitz was suffering from schizophrenia given the strong medication he was on \u2013 notably\u00a0<strong>Olanzapine<\/strong>, whose\u00a0<em>side effects can include \u2018unusual changes in personality, thoughts or behaviour; hallucinations and suicidal tendencies<\/em>.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0(<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Telegraph<\/span><\/strong>, April 3, 2015)<\/p>\n<p>Turns out cannibal-killer\u00a0<strong>\u201cVince\u201d Wei Guang Li<\/strong>\u00a0is a fan of the antipsychotic drug: \u201cMy thinking is becoming normal.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t think weird things.\u00a0\u00a0I take my medication,\u00a0<strong>Olanzapine<\/strong>, every day.\u00a0\u00a0I am glad to take it.\u00a0\u00a0I don\u2019t have any weird voices anymore,\u2019 Li said in 2012.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0(<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">National Post<\/span><\/strong>, February 27, 2014)\u00a0\u00a0Of course, Li\u2019s biggest fan, his wildly admiring psychiatrist\u00a0<strong>Steven Kremer<\/strong>, was pressing for greater liberties within months of the creature\u2019s arrival at the secure wing of the Selkirk Manitoba institution, following the\u00a0<strong>NCR\u00a0<\/strong>[<strong>Not Criminally Responsible<\/strong>, the politically correct version of criminally insane] finding.\u00a0\u00a0Another of Li\u2019s admirers is\u00a0<strong>Chris Summerville<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>CEO<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>Schizophrenia Society of Canada<\/strong>: \u201cSummerville, who is based in Winnipeg, has worked with Li.\u00a0\u00a0He says the 46-year old has done well in care at the\u00a0<strong>Selkirk Mental Health Centre<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Li&#8217;s psychiatrist,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Steven Kremer<\/strong>, told the review board recently that Li had not had hallucinations in over a year.\u00a0\u00a0[A whole year!]\u00a0\u00a0On Friday, the review board ruled Li could transfer to a psychiatric centre at a Winnipeg hospital and will be allowed unsupervised visits to the Manitoba capital as long as he carries a cellphone.\u00a0\u00a0[Dr.\u00a0<strong>Alexander Simpson<\/strong>, chief of forensic psychiatry at the\u00a0<strong>Centre for Addiction and Mental Health<\/strong>, a\u00a0<strong>University of Toronto<\/strong>\u00a0teaching hospital, says] getting people with certain mental health conditions \u2014 schizophrenia among them \u2014 to religiously take their medication can be a problem.\u00a0\u00a0But Simpson says people who have committed a serious crime while in the grips of psychosis are often so horrified by their actions that they are highly motivated to follow a mandated medical regimen.\u00a0\u00a0\u2018The fact that they&#8217;ve harmed somebody seriously or killed somebody and caused other people grave suffering is a thing they can feel immensely bad about and is then a motivator for changing one&#8217;s life.\u00a0\u00a0And those are issues we work on with people very much.\u2019&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0(<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CBC<\/span><\/strong>, March 2, 2015)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, records show Li has a history of refusing to take his meds; it\u2019s how he got into trouble in the first place.\u00a0\u00a0And he is not entirely \u201chorrified\u201d by his actions:\u00a0\u00a0to this day he refuses to believe that he committed an act of cannibalism. In what sense does that suggest he is \u201ccured?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Parts of\u00a0<strong>Tim McLean<\/strong>\u2019s heart and both his eyes were never recovered, not from the crime scene, not from Li\u2019s pockets, where other of his victim\u2019s body parts had been secreted away.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, if Li\u2019s medication is still\u00a0<strong>Olanzapine<\/strong>, should innocent bystanders hope he takes it religiously &#8211; or not?\u00a0\u00a0It always impresses us that Canadian news stories are fleshed out in the foreign press, while the domestic version is curiously sanitized and, well, bloodless.\u00a0\u00a0We are grateful to the\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">New York Daily News<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0of October 4, 2014, for filling in some of the gaps; for instance, we did not know that Li was responsible for two deaths: \u201cMounties arrived in time to witness Li slicing off pieces of the body and eating them.\u00a0\u00a0Later, after they snagged the killer while he was trying to escape through a window, they found plastic bags containing body parts, and a piece of an ear, nose and tongue in his pocket.\u00a0The scene was so horrific that at least one of the first responders never got over it.\u00a0\u00a0In July 2014, [<strong>Cpl<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Ken Barker<\/strong>] took his own life, after sending messages to loved ones saying, \u2018I\u2019m too broken to ever be fixed.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[As for the catalyst,] born in 1968 in Dandong City, China,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Li was a premature baby and a fragile child who suffered from developmental delays<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0He later graduated from college, married, and found work in a factory.\u00a0\u00a0In 2001, Li and his wife immigrated to Canada, where he slipped from one menial job to the next.\u00a0\u00a0Around 2004, his wife told police, he started to complain of hearing voices.\u00a0\u00a0He became increasingly strange as he hopped from city to city in search of work.\u00a0\u00a0Police once found him wandering along the road, disoriented, sleep-deprived and hungry.\u00a0\u00a0He told them that God had ordered him to \u2018follow the sun\u2019 by walking from Toronto to Winnipeg.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, he ended up in a psychiatric center but left after a short stay.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">He refused to follow doctor\u2019s orders<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0[But this time for sure, right?]\u00a0\u00a0In the two years before the murder, Li traveled back and forth to China twice.\u00a0\u00a0The last time, in summer of 2008, he stayed only one day before hightailing it back to Canada.\u00a0\u00a0[Something is not right here: This peripatetic holder of menial jobs who is losing a tenuous grip on reality manages to scrape together the scratch to travel to China\u00a0<em>twice<\/em>\u00a0on the income provided by a series of jobs swinging a mop and delivering newspapers?\u00a0\u00a0(His wife waitressed in Chinese restaurants, but tips aren\u2019t that good.\u00a0\u00a0In any event, the couple divorced in 2006).<\/p>\n<p>Despite Li\u2019s worsening mental state, he nevertheless managed to bamboozle us &#8211; twice: He arrived on June 11, 2001 and took the citizenship oath Nov. 7, 2006.\u00a0\u00a0This man, described as barely functional in English, was admitted as a skilled worker with a supposed job waiting as a computer programmer; he never worked in the field.\u00a0\u00a0Was this a case of misrepresentation?\u00a0\u00a0Now that the gentleman is essentially a free agent, perhaps the time has come to examine the means by which he finessed entry and citizenship.\u00a0\u00a0Must we really be stuck with this cannibal?\u00a0\u00a0Every account of the horrors on that bus suggest that Li\u2019s attack on McLean was entirely unprovoked: Does it change the picture to learn that McLean was just a little guy?\u00a0\u00a0At 5 foot 4 inches and 130 pounds, he was almost certainly the smallest man on the bus.\u00a0\u00a0Remember, Li changed seats to sit beside his victim just prior to the attack.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0[This article will appears in the April, 2015 issue of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CANADIAN\u00a0IMMIGRATION\u00a0HOTLINE<\/span>.
