Rethinking Labor Day<\/a><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

PETER BRIMELOW WRITES: F<\/strong>or over 20 years, until forced to suspend by New York Attorney General Letitia James\u2019 unconstitutional lawfare<\/a>, VDARE.com regularly celebrated Labor Day with articles discussing the impact of immigration on American workers, generally a taboo topic in the Main Stream Media, Left and \u201cRight.\u201d I\u2019m reposting our last one, by James Fulford on September 3, 2023, and linking to our earlier coverage. In view of Donald Trump\u2019s decisive victory in the 2024 Presidential election, it seems particularly prescient.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Title: A Crying Need for General Repairs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Publication: The Saturday Globe<\/em>, Utica, August 27, 1901<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary: An American Laborer pleads with Uncle Sam to repair the wall of \u201cImmigration Restriction\u201d because its neglect has opened the way for disreputable men to enter the country. An\u201cEmployer of Labor\u201d in his top hat and tails<\/strong><\/em> happily assists a man wearing a fez as he climbs down the ladder. The image caption reads, \u201cAmerican Labor Calls Uncle Sam\u2019s Attention to the Inefficiency of His Immigration Restriction Wall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I might add that while there are various ethnicities climbing over the wall, the fellow with a dagger between his teeth who has undermined the wall and is crawling through is pretty clearly an Italian<\/a> member of the Mafia<\/a>, or \u201cBlack Hand,\u201d<\/a> as it was known at the time.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found this in a 2019 Trump-bashing, immigrant enthusiast column in by a Korean named Young Kwon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address to the nation<\/a> on January 8th, President Trump made a case for his border wall that appealed to left values, saying that unauthorized immigration \u201cstrains public resources and drives down jobs and wages,\u201d and that \u201camong those hardest hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans.\u201d The implication of the line is clear: How could the administration be \u201cracist\u201d when its policies are meant to protect socio-economically marginalized minorities? <\/em>Conservative pundits, and the many Americans who already support the administration\u2019s efforts to curtail immigration, may embrace this new line of argument. Some who identify as part of the political left may even be tempted by it, seeing immigration as undermining native workers\u2019 bargaining power. But this talking point has to be rejected by those who want a dignified, fulfilling life for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invoking the well-being of native workers as an argument against immigration is nothing new. History offers ample examples of elites repeatedly exploiting the supposed conflict between marginalized workers and immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then he has a lot of stuff about the nineteenth century, in which the actual sufferings of actual American workers due to immigrant displacement is ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kwon [Tweet him<\/a>] sees white workers as racist for not wanting to be replaced by blacks (used as strikebreakers<\/a>), either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My point: The problems caused by immigration in the nineteenth century were huge, real, and led to more than thirty years of worker and immigration patriot agitation until the 1924 Immigration Act was passed and signed <\/a>by Calvin Coolidge.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a column written here 22 years ago, I called this The (First) Thirty Years War For Immigration Reform.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That led to the forty year Great Pause<\/a> in which America won the Second World War without much in the way of immigrant soldiery. The nineteenth and early twentieth century immigration restriction activism <\/a>was a tremendous success politically and economically\u2014for the country at large and, of course, for the American workingman.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, these gains were eradicated by the post-1965 immigration disaster<\/a>, culminating in the Biden Rush<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a little luck and perseverance, the same kind of activism\u2014of the kind <\/a>that won the 2016 Presidential election<\/a>\u2014can work in the early twenty-first century, and lead to more happy Labor Days, once the Biden Rush<\/a> is a thing of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
