Remember that, in 1914, Vancouver was a city of just 70,000 souls. The passengers had to pay a hefty fare.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gurdit Singh<\/strong>\u00a0was an associate of an Indian revolutionary movement called the\u00a0Ghadar Party<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Ghadar<\/em>\u00a0is Urdu for \u201cmutiny.\u201d Many Whites could recall the brutal massacre of men, women and children when some units of the Indian Army mutinied in 1857. The mutiny claimed over 11,000 British troops and hundreds of British women and children.\u00a0Undesirables:White Canada and the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>explains: In 1913, \u201cthe\u00a0Hindustani Workers of the Pacific Coast<\/strong>, a revolutionary organization,\u00a0 crystallized \u2026 in Astoria, Oregon. Komagata Maru Incident Fact Sheet \u2013 No Apology Needed<\/strong>
\nThe\u00a0Komagata Maru’s<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0arrival challenged a 1908 regulation that denied entry to immigrants unless they had $200 and had made a “continuous journey” from their home country. \u2026 Under the policy, only 20 returning residents, and the ship’s doctor and his family were allowed to enter. The remaining passengers were confined to the ship for two months, after which the ship was forced to sail back to India.<\/p>\n

The incursion of the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was organized by a radical Sikh businessman named\u00a0Gurdit Singh<\/strong>\u00a0as a test of Canada\u2019s immigration laws. It was a business venture.\u00a0Gurdit Singh<\/strong>, originally from the Punjab but based in Singapore, told associates in Hong Kong that, if the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0succeeded in busting Canada\u2019s immigration regulations, he\u2019d bring 25,000 Sikhs to British Columbia. Remember that, in 1914, Vancouver was a city of just 70,000 souls. The passengers had to pay a hefty fare.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gurdit Singh<\/strong>\u00a0was an associate of an Indian revolutionary movement called the\u00a0Ghadar Party<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Ghadar<\/em>\u00a0is Urdu for \u201cmutiny.\u201d Many Whites could recall the brutal massacre of men, women and children when some units of the Indian Army mutinied in 1857. The mutiny claimed over 11,000 British troops and hundreds of British women and children.\u00a0Undesirables:White Canada and the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>explains: In 1913, \u201cthe\u00a0Hindustani Workers of the Pacific Coast<\/strong>, a revolutionary organization,\u00a0 crystallized \u2026 in Astoria, Oregon. It would soon become known, after the title of its magazine, as the\u00a0Ghadar Party<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a provocative name, since\u00a0ghadar\u00a0<\/em>meant mutiny. The new party \u2026 advocated the armed overthrow of the British Empire, extolling [sic] Indian soldiers to mutiny once again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHusain Rahim, Bhag Singh, Balwant Singh<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sohan Lal<\/strong>, among others were its members.\u201d These four were key members of the\u00a0Shore Committee<\/strong>\u00a0which agitated on behalf of the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/strong>, raised funds and retained legal assistance.\u00a0Undesirables<\/span><\/strong>, which is fervently for the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0cause, adds: Immigration inspector\u00a0William Hopkinson<\/strong>\u00a0was \u201ccertain that the voyage of the\u00a0Komagata Maru<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was part of a\u00a0Ghadar Party<\/strong>\u00a0strategy, with\u00a0Gurdit Singh<\/strong>\u00a0in on the conspiracy. Singh\u2019s statements to the press on the arrival had confirmed [these] fears: \u2018What is done with this ship load of my people will determine whether we shall have peace in all parts of the British Empire.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

William Hopkinson\u2019s short life would make an excellent movie plot or a gripping dramatic series dealing with undercover work and foreign revolutionaries, schemes to hoodwink the Canadian government and much, much more. Oh, yes, and many shootings and assassinations by a group of newcomers to Canada.<\/p>\n

Instead of apologizing for a past patriotic government\u2019s decision to expel a shipload of illegals and instead of issuing a stamp (as the Harper government did in 2014) commemorating the radicals of the unsuccessful\u00a0Komagata\u00a0Maru<\/em>\u00a0immigration incursion of 1914, the Canadian government should issue a stamp honouring\u00a0William C Hopkinson<\/strong>. He was a gifted linguist and a daring undercover agent who ran a network of spies among Vancouver\u2019s radical Sikh community. He developed much of the information that the\u00a0Dominion Government<\/strong>\u00a0used to expel the bulk of the\u00a0Komagata\u00a0Maru\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0passengers in the summer of 1914. Largely due to his information and the leadership of a rookie Vancouver\u00a0MP<\/strong>\u00a0H.H. Stevens<\/strong>, the Canadian government met the challenge of unwanted and uninvited illegals seeking to evade our rules and sneak into Canada.<\/p>\n

William Hopkinson<\/strong>\u00a0would pay the ultimate price for his dedication. He was assassinated by Mewa Singh, a Ghadr party member and Sikh radical inside the courthouse in downtown Vancouver, October 21, 1914.\u00a0It is now the Vancouver Art Gallery. Many of his Indian agents were also murdered by radical Sikhs. With all the boo-hooing about the government of\u00a0Sir Robert Borden\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0decision to expel the illegals, the toadying politicians and the servile media tell us little of the killings and violence perpetrated by the Sikh radicals within their own community in that Vancouver of a century ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
