White nationalist advocate Jared Taylor came to Salisbury University on Wednesday behind metal barricades, metal detectors and a heavy police presence, while hundreds of protesters waited in the rain to make sure his message of racial separation did not pass quietly through the Eastern Shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students behind the barricades booed nearly everyone who entered Devilbiss Hall, where Taylor spoke in a campus lecture hall behind more security and a sign-in table. The event, organized by Maryland College Republicans President Colin McEvers, was a makeup date after the university canceled an earlier appearance over reported safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, Taylor spoke for nearly 45 minutes to a lecture hall that appeared about three-quarters full, with an audience diverse in age and race. {snip}<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor\u2019s speech, \u201cIs there a solution to the American race problem,\u201d offered one answer: what he called a \u201cvelvet divorce\u201d from multiracial America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe idea that diversity is a great and wonderful gift is an idea reserved exclusively for white countries,\u201d he said. \u201cImagine going to China \u2026 [and saying there\u2019s] too damned many Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He mocked the idea that diversity is a strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes it stop global warming, prevent tooth decay?\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, Taylor singled out a New York Times reporter in the audience and cited the New York Police Department\u2019s 2024 \u201cCrime and Enforcement Activity\u201d report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will tell you something about her city that her newspaper never will,\u201d Taylor said, citing figures he used to suggest Black and brown crime widely outpaces crimes committed by whites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very simple math to figure out what would the crime rates be like in the city if you swapped out the Hispanics and the Blacks and replace them with whites who commit crimes at exactly the same rates as the white people who live there today,\u201d he said. \u201cYou really could defund the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor closed by calling multiracial society a \u201cmisreading of human nature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf this was a marriage \u2026 we have irreconcilable differences,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cI think the United States should get completely out of the business of trying to force people to live together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
