A long-run\u00adning char\u00adity ad cam\u00adpaign famil\u00adiar to Cana\u00addians for its catchy Kars4Kids jingle will no longer play in Cali\u00adfor\u00adnia after a court found it viol\u00adates false advert\u00adising laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pop\u00adu\u00adlar ad shows chil\u00addren singing the tune while play\u00ading musical instru\u00adments and ask\u00ading people to donate their cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, however, Cali\u00adfor\u00adnia cab\u00adin\u00adet\u00admaker Bruce Puter\u00adbaugh, who is in his 70s, filed a law\u00adsuit after donat\u00ading a 2001 Volvo XC worth $250 US. Puter\u00adbaugh claims he was under the impres\u00adsion the char\u00adity helped “under\u00adpriv\u00adileged kids from all over the U.S,” accord\u00ading to court doc\u00adu\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those doc\u00adu\u00adments show it wasn’t until later that he learned the main pur\u00adpose of Kars4Kids is not help\u00ading local dis\u00adad\u00advant\u00adaged chil\u00addren but instead fund\u00ading a Jew\u00adish organ\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion called Oorah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his decision earlier this month, Judge Gas\u00adsia Apkarian of the Super\u00adior Court of Cali\u00adfor\u00adnia noted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oorah’s pro\u00adgrams include “match\u00admak\u00ading for young adults and gap year trips to Israel for 17 and 18-yearolds.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kars4Kids gets fail\u00ading grade from char\u00adity watch\u00addog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sim\u00adilar ads are also run\u00adning in Canada, and have been for years. That’s a red flag for one Toronto-based char\u00adity watch\u00addog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Char\u00adity Intel\u00adli\u00adgence Canada gave Kars4Kids its sole one-star rat\u00ading, mean\u00ading it found fail\u00adures on mul\u00adtiple issues, includ\u00ading report\u00ading to donors about how their money helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s a fail when it comes to trans\u00adpar\u00adency,” said Kate Bahen, the man\u00adaging dir\u00adector. “You have bet\u00adter giv\u00ading options.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wendy Kir\u00adwan, Kars4Kids’ dir\u00adector of pub\u00adlic rela\u00adtions, did not respond when asked whether any of the pro\u00adceeds raised in Canada go to help Cana\u00addian chil\u00addren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But accord\u00ading to Kars4Kids Canada’s web\u00adsite, the entity is also part of Oorah Char\u00adit\u00adable Organ\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion, a non-profit Jew\u00adish group. Oorah is lis\u00adted as a registered char\u00adity with the Canada Rev\u00adenue Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cana\u00addian tax fil\u00adings show the organ\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion trans\u00adferred $12.6 mil\u00adlion to the U.S. and Israel in the fiscal year end\u00ading May 31, 2025 – the most recent data avail\u00adable for projects such as the Texas Torah Insti\u00adtute and the Cin\u00adcin\u00adnati Hebrew Day School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oorah’s CRA fil\u00adings show $19 mil\u00adlion in expendit\u00adures in 2024-25 fiscal year, includ\u00ading $3.7 mil\u00adlion on advert\u00adising and pro\u00admo\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an emailed state\u00adment to CBC News, Kir\u00adwan said Kars4Kids Canada is a sep\u00adar\u00adate organ\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion from the one in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But regard\u00ading the Cali\u00adfor\u00adnia rul\u00ading, she added that “the decision is deeply flawed, ignores the facts, and mis\u00adap\u00adplies the law.
