<\/a>Tri\u00adstin hop\u00adper16 Jun 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\nAs part of their stated com\u00admit\u00adment to \u201cdecol\u00adon\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion and Indi\u00adgen\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion\u201d in health care, the Yukon is deb\u00adut\u00ading Indi\u00adgen\u00adous-only park\u00ading spaces at all three of its hos\u00adpit\u00adals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a social media post last week, Yukon Hos\u00adpit\u00adals announced that the ter\u00adrit\u00adory\u2019s hos\u00adpit\u00adals would hence\u00adforth fea\u00adture reserved park\u00ading spots marked \u201cRespect\u00adfully Reserved for Eld\u00aders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reserved exclus\u00adively for \u201cFirst Nation, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis Eld\u00aders,\u201d the spaces are marked with signs fea\u00adtur\u00ading com\u00admis\u00adsioned art from two Yukon-based Indi\u00adgen\u00adous artists; one pre\u00adpared a styl\u00adized image of two eld\u00aders, while another pre\u00adpared the accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading text read\u00ading \u201crespect\u00adfully reserved for eld\u00aders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese spaces are one way we are show\u00ading our com\u00admit\u00adment to Truth & Recon\u00adcili\u00adation, Decol\u00adon\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion & Indi\u00adgen\u00adiz\u00ada\u00adtion,\u201d reads a descrip\u00adtion by Yukon Hos\u00adpit\u00adals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The elder spots are set to be installed at the ter\u00adrit\u00adory\u2019s main hos\u00adpital in White\u00adhorse, as well as at the Dawson City Com\u00admunity Hos\u00adpital and the Wat\u00adson Lake Com\u00admunity Hos\u00adpital. Park\u00ading for every\u00adone at all three hos\u00adpit\u00adals is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They will be placed in lots whose only other des\u00adig\u00adnated park\u00ading is cur\u00adrently for staff or dis\u00adabled users. Although the White\u00adhorse Gen\u00aderal Hos\u00adpital not\u00adably has des\u00adig\u00adnated RV park\u00ading: a ser\u00advice for patients from dis\u00adtant com\u00admunit\u00adies driv\u00ading in for sched\u00aduled pro\u00adced\u00adures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yukon Hos\u00adpit\u00adals, like many Cana\u00addian gov\u00adern\u00adment and health-care author\u00adit\u00adies, has pub\u00adlicly embraced the notion that its facil\u00adit\u00adies are shot through with \u201csys\u00adtemic racism\u201d that can only be alle\u00advi\u00adated via dif\u00adfer\u00aden\u00adtial treat\u00adment for mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSys\u00adtemic racism and intol\u00ader\u00adance is per\u00advas\u00adive and deep-rooted . … We know it is present in Canada, in the Yukon and in our com\u00admunit\u00adies. It exists within our hos\u00adpit\u00adals and health care sys\u00adtem,\u201d reads the agency\u2019s 2022-2027 stra\u00adtegic plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That same plan has the hos\u00adpital author\u00adity pledging to make \u201cYukon First Nations ways of know\u00ading, doing and being part of everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Up to one-third of patients at White\u00adhorse Gen\u00aderal Hos\u00adpital are Indi\u00adgen\u00adous, accord\u00ading to a Yukon Hos\u00adpit\u00adals estim\u00adate in a 2016 news\u00adlet\u00adter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the ter\u00adrit\u00adory, like B.C., has a policy of ask\u00ading patients their Indi\u00adgen\u00adous status in order to access cul\u00adtur\u00adally spe\u00adcific ser\u00advices such as tra\u00addi\u00adtional food or \u201ctra\u00addi\u00adtional medi\u00adcine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sys\u00adtem is largely based on the hon\u00adour sys\u00adtem, however. The patient guide\u00adbook to the White\u00adhorse Gen\u00aderal Hos\u00adpital notes that the facil\u00adity\u2019s admit\u00adting desk will \u201cask every patient if they would like to identify as First Nations, M\u00e9tis or Inuit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis will ensure that all per\u00adsons that self-identify will have access to our pro\u00adgrams,\u201d it notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The threshold of Indi\u00adgen\u00adous-only park\u00ading spots is a new one. Not just in the Yukon, but in Canada gen\u00ader\u00adally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In fact, the Indi\u00adgen\u00adous-only spots appear to be Canada\u2019s only instances of pub\u00adlic park\u00ading spots being set aside based on the immut\u00adable char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adist\u00adics of the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The closest ana\u00adlogue would be instances in both Ger\u00admany and South Korea where pub\u00adlic park\u00ading spots were set aside exclus\u00adively for women. Ger\u00admany has been installing women-only park\u00ading spots since the 1990s, fol\u00adlow\u00ading a wave of viol\u00adent sexual assaults tak\u00ading place in park\u00ading gar\u00adages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spots, labelled \u201creser\u00adviert fuer frauen,\u201d are typ\u00adic\u00adally in well-lit areas loc\u00adated close to build\u00ading entrances. No such \u201cshe-spots\u201d or \u201cFrauen\u00adpark\u00adplatz\u201d are known to exist in Canada, although there are spots for expect\u00adant moth\u00aders, or par\u00adents with young chil\u00addren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Yukon park\u00ading spaces do fit within a lar\u00adger trend of Indi\u00adgen\u00adous Cana\u00addians being given pri\u00ador\u00adity access to pub\u00adlic spaces in the ser\u00advice of recon\u00adcili\u00adation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the more con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsial was the B.C. gov\u00adern\u00adment agree\u00ading last year to begin clos\u00ading select pro\u00advin\u00adcial parks to non-indi\u00adgen\u00adous users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just this week\u00adend, in fact, B.C. is set to shut off pub\u00adlic access to Botan\u00adical Beach, a pop\u00adu\u00adlar sec\u00adtion of the Juan da Fuca trail. Accord\u00ading to a state\u00adment by the B.C. Min\u00adistry of Envir\u00adon\u00adment, the 72-hour clos\u00adure is being done \u201cto give mem\u00adbers of the Pacheedaht First Nation time and pri\u00advacy to har\u00advest mar\u00adine resources, con\u00adnect with part of their ter\u00adrit\u00adory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A much longer clos\u00adure is also being ordered for Jof\u00adfre Lakes Pro\u00advin\u00adcial Park, which will be closed between June 20 and 27, and then again between Sept. 8 and 30. \u201cThese peri\u00adods will provide space for the Lil\u00adwat Nation and N\u2019quatqua to con\u00adnect with the land,\u201d reads a dis\u00adclaimer on the park\u2019s offi\u00adcial site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
